Could Allen Iverson be “The Answer” for Orlando?

Let me start this article off on the right foot by answering my own question presented in the article title: NO, Allen Iverson is not the ultimate answer or solution for the Orlando Magic. However, that being said, Iverson could be an immediate, temporary solution to many of the Orlando Magic’s problems. Iverson hasn’t played in the NBA since the 2009-2010 season, starting that season with the Memphis Grizzlies and ending the season back in Philadelphia where it all started. Iverson had been run out of the NBA due in large part to his unwillingness to accept a 6th man role off the bench. But now Iverson claims his time spent in Europe away from the NBA has “humbled” him.

“I just want to do whatever an organization wants me to do,” Iverson said. “Everybody made a big thing about me not wanting to come off the bench, but I said that at that point because it never happened to me in my life and it was something new to me, and obviously I didn’t know how to handle it. But to be back on the biggest stage is my whole thing and I feel like I have a couple more years left in my career and I want to play. I sat through and watched the whole season and it was tough for me. Now I just try to do what I have to do to be physically and mentally able to get back on the stage.”- Allen Iverson in an interview with

Iverson’s recent remarks in an interview has this NBA analyst thinking that whatever team decides to give Iverson a fresh start could end up with an even more hungry Iverson than we have seen in the past, which could be scary for NBA opponents. On the other end of the spectrum, Iverson, who turned 36 this past summer, is losing the battle with “Father Time”. Iverson averaged a career low 13.1 points a game in his last NBA season, but even with the lowest numbers of his career, Iverson still carries a 26.7 point per game career scoring average.

If the Orlando Magic had enough common sense to pursue Allen Iverson, it would be a low-risk/high-reward scenario for the Magic. The cost to sign Allen Iverson would be minimal. If there isn’t a high market for Iverson, the Magic could sign him for cheap. Orlando would then have one of the NBA’s best scorers of all time, and even with glimpses of his past, Iverson would be able to help the Magic out greatly.
